Green Nest

Aged Care Facility

Approaching the Herston green nest, there is an obvious sense of openness. This design intent aims to break down the social barriers between the sites surroundings and the internal community. Further to the sites openness, the incorporation of green spaces aim to create a shaded and comfortable setting, while also encouraging both occupants and users to enjoy the outdoor space, communicate, collaborate and consequently obtain a strong sense of community.

The developments footprint incorporates the natural contours of the land in an attempt to effectively communicate how the building addresses the street. As a result, underground carparking is provided for the permanent residence buildings, which are located at the sites western and north-eastern face.

Reflecting the ability to cut through the UQ school of dentistry, the Herston green nest aims to extent this intent through its own site. The idea behind this comes back to connecting the building to the street. Through the breakdown of walls and fences, the openness of the site aims to promote interaction from all surrounding amenities. With this said, the internal space is to be well lit with the use of 24/7 security measures to ensure the safety of the occupants.

Furthermore, the short stay building is designed to cater for surrounding patients as well as visiting friends and relatives. Commonly, patients who have gone through surgical procedures, or are about to go through surgical procedures, need to stay within close proximity to the hospital, whether that be for regular monitoring or simply for peace of mind. The short stay building will cater for these individuals, providing contained studio accommodation, within walking distant to the medical precinct. The site is also serviced by the Brisbane bus network, allowing visitors without cars to easily access locations which are out of walking distance.
