Integrated community facilities play a vital role in creating healthy communities, enhancing wellbeing, building social networks and providing a resource for training, employment and personal development. The activities supported by these shared facilities are wide ranging and can include neighbourhood houses, community hubs, youth groups, public meeting spaces, emergency services, community health and aged care services, libraries, schools and recreational facilities.

Pomona is small town which holds a strong sense of place amongst community members. The town has a desire to learn share and collaborate with one another, however, can only achieve this to a small scale as the town lacks the facilities to accommodate these needs.  The development of a new social and cultural centre which is integrated to fit within existing elements of the site aim to create social and financial opportunity for the town of Pomona.

This loose fit design proposal hopes to promote user interaction and collaboration for the community as well as for visitors of the town. Working in unison with the environment, elements relating to sustainable outcomes have been implemented into the proposal as a connecting agent to the surrounding context.

It is intended that this proposal enhances the site, however, also the larger context of the Pomona. Using these elements in an attempt to promote the meeting and gathering of community members strive to make Pomona a more connected community. Furthermore, the buildings form is developed to represent the identity of the town and to be view as a catalysis project for growing community abroad.

Cultural vitality is integral to all healthy community. Through the investigation of the driving needs of residents and visitors within Pomona the development of a community space can drastically benefit Pomona socially, culturally and financially. Connecting communities is an important part of the development and future outlook for a town. The implementation of the Peoples Place aims to unite Pomona and stand as a catalyst project for future developments.

The proposal will not only advertise Pomona to a greater a region but will also create a number of social and financial benefits for the town. The project predicts a large number of people to be employed during the construction phase with many job opportunities also upon completion.

An important connection is made symbolically to the historic roots of the town through form and materials used for construction. The town of Pomona has a strong community bond, as well as respect for their land, however, elements of reconciliation have slowly become less involved in the towns function and therefore this proposal attempts to bring a piece of their history back into the heart of the town. The design attempts to bridge a connection between the original town and the new future Pomona holds.

Considering the loose fit space is designed to be adaptive and dynamic the community of Pomona as well as visitors from greater regions have the ability to use the centre to cater for their personal desires and needs. Furthermore, and most importantly, the centre is directed at encouraging communities to share, learn and collaborate which can pave the way for a prosperous future.

The development aims to be viewed by greater regions as an example of a town specific social and cultural hub which promotes a versatile collaboration of activities. The building will represent Pomona’s identity both physically and metaphorically and aims to be a testament to the community and their town.
