The design for this single dwelling block of land has been structured around the desires Of the client as well as adapting a sustainable approach to fit within the surrounding environment. The client for this project have been identified as a married couple who love early mornings and who also love to cook (bake). With this said, the main elements for this house aim to cater for these three desires. That being the case, this house is ideal for this couple and therefore has specific features which turn this house into a home. The incorporation of a butler’s pantry, which can be directly accessed from driving into the property (driveway), is one of these features and allows the couple to easily transport groceries straight from the car to the fridge. The butler’s pantry contains a dishwasher, fridge as well as ample cupboard space. This is done as to allow the occupants to entertain guests while still keeping a clean and presentable kitchen. Moving through the large open plan kitchen the tall bi-fold doors and windows lead the eye straight out to a private enclosed garden. The garden displays polished wooden decking carefully stitched into the natural ground as well as a bbq area and green wall (contain vine tomatoes and other herbs). Moving further through this area leads straight into the living a dining room. This room has the highest ceilings within this house and is designed specifically
To allow for maximum cross ventilation of cool air, while hot air which rises to the roof is flushed out through high louvers and whirly bird located on the roof. In addition, the clients will be able to enjoy all of this in the early hours of the morning. The orientation of the house, married with the large glass window located on the eastern front, allow for maximum sun exposure into both this private garden/bbq areas as well as the main bedroom. The main bedroom is located on the second floor and is again designed to allow for maximum early
Morning sun. This house allows the clients to feel right at home as it caters for every one of their wants and needs. Furthermore, the house is also wheel chair accessible for the guestroom, bathroom, study as well as front deck and entrance. This is done through the use of a street access ramp into the property.
MATERIALITY
The materiality of the house has utilized two different construction systems: a light weight cladding as well as a heavy weight brick and block. These weatherboards are engineered to be defect free and treated with an organic preservation system to create a durable and aesthetic cladding solution. This particular cladding system uses Reconstituted timber products. This product is made from forestry waste with minimal energy or chemical input, high manufacturing waste recovery and water recycling. This product is among the most sustainable
of all cladding options. Timber from sustainable sources provides a renewable building material that takes in carbon from the atmosphere while growing and stores it for the life of the building. Its greatest enemy is the termite, although rot and mold from condensation is becoming an increasingly critical threat as we seal our homes and increase insulation levels
NATURAL VENTILATION/SUNLIGHT
While designing for a passive response the house works with the climate and not against it.
The use of natural ventilation achieved through carefully positions windows and louvers allow the occupants to remain thermally comfortable with minimal auxiliary heating or cooling, which accounts for about 40% (or much more in some climates) of energy use in the average Australian home. The use of over hangs, as well as carefully placed vegetation allow for optimum sunlight to warm the house during the winter, while also providing shading as to keep the house cool during the summer.
