LEVEL 1 PLAN

A buildings location and immediate environment form an important framework within which a building is conceptualized and designed. Located on ferny avenue, Surfers paradise, this site has a riverside location directly next to the Nerang river. The design for this development responds to the sub-tropical climate, riverside environment and neighboring buildings to create an urban environment that embodies a distinct sense of place for Surfer’s Paradise

Therefore, the proposed development for this site is to extend, and re-design, the existing boardwalk as well as incorporating pontoons in order to connect existing and future restaurants, park lands as well as family and tourist landmarks.

The insertion of the urban film studio incorporates a number of elements in order to fit within the existing sites surroundings. These include, but are not limited to, using curves that couple with existing landforms, seamlessly extending the new boardwalk within the west facing façade, extending the existing grass land to become part of the building’s roof as a habitable/interactive attribute as well as way finding techniques employed throughout the extent of the boardwalk and public spaces (promotes future development)

1.copper feature installations placed along the length of the newly proposed boardwalk, to also act as a wayfinding technique. The material is married with the pontoons (which also follow the boardwalk) as well as the east facing feature screen.

2. In order to effectively achieve optimum sound properties the internal main cinema is lined with acoustic sound rated boards.

3. Environmental design challenges such as significant acoustic issues with the high use road to the east mean that the walls need to be thick. The design incorporates two construction system. Metal stud insulated walls and glass curtain walls. Insulation to be doubled on cinema bounding walls

4. In order to maintain acoustic properties, double glazing is used throughout, however, will use a low tint as to attract the sight of movement. Additionally, over handing roof lines are used to shade glazed panels. Glass panels installed with aluminum mullions

5. Using a variety of urban interface, including a proposed boardwalk upgrade and extension as well as the installation of connecting ferry terminals, along the site that connects the film studio (cinema) to the river’s edge and its surrounding infrastructure.
